Privacy Policy
Last updated: 7 May 2026
This policy explains what information Playdate collects, how we use it, and the rights you have over it. Playdate is operated by Embret Roås, sole proprietor (Norway). Contact: hi@playdate.dog.
We act as the data controller for the personal data described below. We follow the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Norwegian Personal Data Act.
1. What we collect
Account information
- Your name and email address (used to sign in).
- A securely hashed password (we never store the plaintext).
- An optional profile photo and short bio.
- An optional city label.
Matching location
To find dogs near you, you set a single matching pin (a latitude/ longitude point) and a radius. We do not track your device’s live location, and we do not store a history of your movements. The pin is updated only when you change it from inside the app.
Dog profiles
- Your dog’s name, breed, age, sex, size, energy level, and short bio.
- Photos you choose to upload.
Activity
- Swipes (likes / passes) you make on other dogs.
- Matches and the messages you exchange after a mutual match.
- Walks you propose, confirm, or cancel.
Technical data
- Session cookies / secure tokens used to keep you signed in.
- Server logs containing IP address and basic request metadata for security and abuse-prevention. These are kept for at most 30 days.
We do not use third-party advertising networks, sell data to brokers, or build a profile of you for advertising. We do not run cross-site tracking or device fingerprinting.
2. Why we use it (legal basis)
- Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) — to provide the matching service, deliver messages, and run walks.
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) — to keep the service safe (rate-limiting, abuse prevention, moderation of reports) and to operate basic infrastructure logging.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) — for any optional newsletter you sign up for. You can withdraw consent at any time.
3. Who we share it with
Other Playdate users see your name, your dog’s profile, and the approximate distance from your matching pin. They do not see your email, your exact coordinates, or your account history. After you match, the other user can see the messages you exchange with them.
We use a small number of vetted service providers (data processors) to run the service:
- Cloud hosting (Railway) — hosts the API and database.
- Object storage (AWS S3) — stores dog photos.
- Email delivery — password reset and account email.
We do not transfer your data outside the EU/EEA without GDPR- compliant safeguards in place (Standard Contractual Clauses).
4. How long we keep it
- Account, profile, and dog data: until you delete your account.
- Matches and messages: until you or the other user deletes the account, or until either of you removes the match.
- Server logs: at most 30 days.
- Reports made about other users: kept for up to 12 months for safety review, then anonymised.
5. Deleting your account
You can permanently delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account inside the Playdate app. Deletion is immediate and removes your account, dogs, photos, swipes, matches, messages, walks, and blocks. It cannot be undone.
If you cannot access the app, email hi@playdate.dog from your account address and we will delete it within 30 days.
6. Your rights
Under GDPR you have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct data that is inaccurate.
- Delete your data (right to erasure).
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Receive your data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent for any processing based on consent.
To exercise any of these rights, email hi@playdate.dog. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) at datatilsynet.no.
7. Children
Playdate is intended for users 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, email hi@playdate.dog and we will remove it.
8. Security
We use TLS for all data in transit, hashed passwords, scoped database access, and short-lived signed URLs for photo access. No system is perfectly secure; if we ever discover a breach affecting you, we will notify you and the relevant authority within 72 hours as required by GDPR.
9. Changes
If we change this policy materially, we’ll update the date at the top and notify you in the app or by email before the change takes effect.
10. Contact
